Students from four area schools were recognized May 11 in Hernando as the annual M.C. Sparks Sr., Memorial Convervation Essay Contest was held at the Agricultural building on Highway 51. Schools represented included Olive Branch Middle School, Sacred Heart School in Walls, Hernando Middle School and Southaven Junior High School.

The Olive Branch Police Department moved across the street from their previous location behind city hall. The department is expected to stay at their new location on Pigeon Roost until the new city hall is built. According to Chief of Police Frank Brown, this temporary facility will last for several years.

The Olive Branch High School track teams participated in the State Track meet in Jackson. The Lady Conquistadors finished ninth in state and the boys placed twelfth in the 4-A Division.

Joyce Haslip is challenging the Olive Branch Democratic Primary Election concerning the Ward 3 race. Haslip, who lost to Perry Lee Bowlan 302-301, is challenging the outcome on the grounds that several people in Ward 3 voted as residents of Ward 2 and 4.

Groundbreaking ceremonies will be held on June 10 for the new DeSoto Center campus of Northwest Mississippi Community College at Church Road.

Allen’s Big Star is celebrating its 21st Anniversary with a number of events until May 23rd. Jerry Allen, manager, said the celebration is a way of saying thank you to all of Big Star’s customers for their support.

The Southaven Charger baseball team celebrated winning the District Championship by sweeping their first round series in the Mississippi State Playoffs against Greenville.

The City of Olive Branch won yet another award for its city park area last week, being notified it had won the 1998 Mississippi Urban & Community Forestry award for local governments with a population less than 20,000.

Webb Construction Company was granted permission to build the county’s new middle school in Hernando after submitting the lowest bid of $9.16 million. The new school will be located west of Getwell Road between Nail and Church Road.

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis urged the Board of Aldermen to approve a $1.8 million complex on Getwell Road just south of Goodman Road. The complex will house fire station No. 4, a fueling station, public works and a police field office.

The DeSoto County Sox 13s defeated Memphis Travelers 4-3 recently in the championship game of the Travelers Invitational tournament held in Bartlett.

Richa Sadara, a junior from Olive Branch High School, has been selected to represent the state of Mississippi in the Miss Teen America 2003 Pageant June 29 in Nashville. As the Miss Mississippi Teen America crown bearer, she will be competing against 49 other contestants from each state.

When the Relay for Life event at Snowden Grove Park ended, the American Cancer Society fundraiser was up to last year’s total of $80,000 and still rising. The event drew 40 teams and over 1,000 people.

Leadership DeSoto’s Class of 2003 was scheduled to end its program with graduation ceremonies May 16 at Bonne Terre. The class is the 12th to complete the program and, with 30 participants, the largest in Leadership DeSoto’s history.

Matt Ryan won the longest drive competition in the Olive Branch Chamber of Commerce tournament held May 12.
