By Bobby Tucker/Special to the Tribune
On Saturday,May 3rd, the Lewisburg Patriots continued their amazing run through the 3-A playoffs. They came from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Mooreville Troopers 5-3 behind another complete game by sophomore Aaron Greenwood. He gave up seven hits, struck out eight, and walked only one.
"Traditionally they have a very strong team. We are very thankful to be here," said Lewisburg coach Rusty Cagle before the game Friday. " My kids are playing very well. Anyone who is still playing must be playing their best."
The large crowd was still filing in when leadoff man Ben Kingsley hit the first pitch for a triple. A sacrifice fly by designated hitter D.H. Gregory made it 1-0 Mooreville. In the third inning Kingsley led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a single by Bruce Wheeler, who wound up with three hits on the day. Suddenly it was 2-0 Mooreville,
A leadoff double by Dylan Castoria, a wild pitch, and a grounder to first by Chad Wardlaw gave Lewisburg their first run. Then the Patriots broke loose in the sixth inning. A single by Castoria and a triple by Wardlaw tied the game at 2-2. With one out and a runner on third,, Mooreville decided to intentionally walk the next two batters to load the bases. Third baseman Stacey Tomlinson lined an inside fast ball down the left field line for a double driving in two runs. He later scored to give Lewisburg the win.
When asked what he was thinking as he watched the two intentional walks, Tomlinson said"I had all the confidence in the world. I got an inside fast ball and was able to turn on it.' Games two and three (if necessary) are in Mooreville Monday. The winner goes to the north half championship series.
