Huling Receives UM’s Highest Honor
OXFORD, Miss. n Ryan Huling of Southaven (38671) has received the University of Mississippi’s highest academic honor, the Taylor Medal. The Marcus Elvis Taylor Memorial was established in 1904 and is awarded to no more than 1 percent of the student body each year. The Taylor Medals were announced during Honors Day ceremonies on April 3.
Huling, a senior exercise science major at UM, is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Randy Huling. He is also a member of Phi Kappa Phi and was awarded the J. Robert Blackburn Undergraduate Award in exercise science.
Engberg nominated to top student award
Mrs. Holly Laros Engberg was nominated by Dr. Bobbie Smothers Jones, University of Mississippi Graduate Professor, for the Outstanding Student Award in Curriculum & Instruction. She will be graduating in May, with a Masters of Education Degree in Curriculum & Instruction with a 4.0. Holly is currently teaching gifted students (3-5 grade), at DeSoto Central Elementary School in Southaven.
Fielder is state winner
Olive Branch 16-year-old homeschooler, Jacob Fielder, has been chosen as the state Level III division second-place winner in the Letters about Literature writing contest. This contest was sponsored last fall by the Mississippi Library Commission. Contest participants were asked to write a letter to an author of their favorite book explaining how the book influenced them. The author he chose to write to was Lucy Maude Montgomery who wrote Anne of Green Gables. As a second-place state winner, Jacob received a $75.00 cash prize. A copy of his award-winning letter is displayed at the B.J. Chain Public Library in Olive Branch.
